Dr. MacKenzie’s Background
Education in Orthopedics
Dr. MacKenzie has been an orthopedic surgeon for 30 years. He is a born and raised Calgarian. He graduated Medical School at University of Alberta, then completed Orthopaedic surgery Residency in Calgary followed by a Fellowship in Joint replacement with Drs. Richard Johnston, John Callaghan and Richard Brand in Iowa. Dr Johnston was one of the pre-eminent hip surgeons in America. Dr. MacKenzie is the recipient of the Frank Stinchfield Award of the The Hip Society for Research into Acetabular Cup fixation.
30 years of Surgical Experience
He is the former Head of the Arthroplasty Division in Calgary. He was one of the Team physicians for the Calgary Stampeder Football club of the CFL for 25 years. Dr. MacKenzie has been involved in teaching and research throughout his career. He has been a faculty member at the Department of Surgery University of Calgary for most of his career.
Dr. MacKenzie was one of the first in North America to perform Birmingham Hip Resurfacing and has the most experience in Canada in performing this procedure. He was among a small number of surgeons involved in training North American surgeons on this technique. He continues to have the largest volume of Birmingham Hip Resurfacing of any Canadian surgeon.
Dr. MacKenzie has practiced Orthopaedics in Calgary since 1992, focusing on Hip and Knee Arthroplasty and Hip Resurfacing and Partial knee replacements. Dr. MacKenzie recently retired from a career the public healthcare system, most recently at South Health Campus in Calgary. There, he helped pioneer Same-Day discharge Total Hip replacements and Partial knee replacements. He offers the newer muscle sparing approaches to Hip Replacement of Direct Superior Approach and also SuperPath technique.
